PROJECT 2: Research On Artist

Research: Edward Hopper
Born: 22 July 1982 in New York
Died: 15 May 1967 in New York (Aged 84)
When growing up he was dominated by women his mother, grandmother, sister, and maid.
When he married in 1924 his wife became his primary model, as well as his life companion and she managed his career.
He was attracted to realistic art, and once he retained his matured style his art remained consistent and self contained in spite of numerous art trends.
In his art he paid alot of attention to the geometrical design and the careful placements of human figures, so that they were in proper balance with their environments.
His central method was effective with his use of light and shadow.
Sharp lines, large shapes, which he played upon with unusual lighting to capture the lonely moods of his subjects. His softness in the realism he used simplified the shapes and details , he used the saturation of color to heighten the contrasts and create moods.
His subject manners was derived from American Urban Scene he was fascinated with it.
He used the American Life (such as; gas stations, motels, movie theaters, railroads and street scrapes), city scape's were subject manner he used a lot of, and his other subject manner came from seascapes and rural landscapes.
Most of his figure paintings were focused on the subtle interaction of human beings with the environments, the emotional themes he used a lot of were of:
Solitude;
Loneliness;
Regret;
Boredom;
Resignation.
He positioned his subject matter as if they were captured just before or after the climax of a scene. His solitary figures are mostly women, they were mostly;
Dressed;
Semi-Dressed;
Nude;
he more often had them
reading;
or looking out a window;
or in a workplace.
